This interior was designed for a development project at the Coed Darcy regeneration scheme in South Wales. The architectural practice designed a cluster of simple, elegant vernacular houses, which you can view here. We were subsequently commissioned to decorate one building with a brief to create a warm, lived in, show home. These interiors, therefore, have no specific owner or client, but have a real personality and a sense of timelessness that perhaps belies the fact that these rooms were assembled and put together just days before they were photographed here.

The budget was very tight; we shopped as much at IKEA as elsewhere.
But by intelligent use of old and new furniture, simple colours and rich accessories, we succeeded in creating two houses that have been remarkably popular with potential owners. It was a fun project for us, and we loved working on the scheme.

While historians doubt it was ever a legally accepted practice, there are said to be numerous examples of houses built that way, including what is now the home to the Snowdonia Society near Betws-y-Coed, Conwy.
But the Welsh name for Coed Cymru’s project is where the similarities with the “one-night” house end. David Jenkins, Coed Cymru director, said their project used cutting edge technology to provide a low-cost wooden home that refuses to compromise on quality. The project utilises Welsh spruce beams to form frames and stud walls, which is then manufactured by Oswestry company Elements Europe.
